If you’re looking for inspiration for your Thanksgiving celebration, we’ve put together a list of some of the biggest Thanksgiving traditions practiced across the country every year, as well as some not so common ones you might want to try out.

Everyone has a big Thanksgiving feast every year, and it’s almost always centered around the Thanksgiving turkey. The way Americans eat is always evolving, so if you have vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, or allergic relatives, use Thanksgiving as a way to stretch your cooking skills.

Many people use Thanksgiving as a chance to volunteer at homeless shelters and foodbanks. If you’re looking for something to do as a family on Thanksgiving that will enrich your children, or just yourself, try it out!

Don’t forget the ceremonial breaking of the wishbone. Two people pull on opposite ends of the wishbone from the turkey and whoever gets the bigger half makes a wish. This is especially fun for kids. Before dessert, try taking a walk around the block or tossing a ball around to digest a little before digging in. This gives you a chance to spend quality time with family.

If you have relatives who live far away, you can still include them in the Thanksgiving conversation and games by setting up a Skype session or Google Hangout. If you’ve never done this before, this year is a great time to enlist the technological skills of younger relatives.

Thanksgiving is all about traditions, but it’s never too late to start a new one!
