The Nissan Altima was first offered in 1992, though it is actually based on the Bluebird design that dates back to 1957. Known as Nissan’s most internationally recognized model, the Bluebird was designed to be the everyman’s car. The Nissan Altima carries on the tradition, offering tons of great features at an affordable price.

There are five generations of the Nissan Altima, including the compact model first introduced in 1992 with a 150-horsepower engine and 4-speed automatic transmission. The second and third generations added a little flair, offering more engine options and up to 260 horsepower. For drivers who want performance in their ride, but don’t want to buy a supercar, the next best thing is the Nissan Maxima. This model first appeared in late 1980 under the nameplate Datsun Nissan Maxima, replacing the Datsun 810. Though it hasn’t always been as sleek as it is now, the Nissan Maxima has quickly become one of America’s most popular sedans. Read on to discover the history of the Nissan Maxima.

According to Edmunds, the Nissan Maxima was introduced because the brand was looking for something with broad appeal, something everyone could enjoy.  The square first-generation model came as a sedan and station wagon, with a 2.4-liter engine and 4-speed automatic transmission. Families loved the roominess and affordability of this model, marking it as a truly practical car.

Second- and third-generation Nissan Maxima models became a little sleeker, but still retained that boxy 1980s look. By 1988 the third-generation Nissan Maxima has a 3.0-liter engine and two transmissions, becoming a popular mid-size sedan for the masses. Little changes over the next few years, though the fifth, sixth, and seventh generation models began to resemble the current model year, also offering more powerful engines and advanced technologies.

The current eighth-generation is unlike any previous model years. An aggressive fascia comes with a boldly redesigned grille, a lighter weight, an available 3.5-liter engine that cranks out 300 horsepower, and tons of entertainment options. If you love sporty design and speed, you want the new Nissan Maxima.
