Taking a car on a test drive seems like a pretty simple thing, but there are things you can do to get as much information about the car as you can from your short spin around the block. Here are some tips on how to test drive a car.

You should always schedule your test drive in advance so you know they’ll have the car you want to test drive, or one close to it. This also gives you a chance to get in and out more quickly and gives you more time to drive a few different cars for comparison.

If you have family or someone you drive regularly, bring them with you to see how they like the ride. The vehicle you choose needs to work for everyone who rides in it. Check the amount of cargo space, seat comfort, how easily accessible the controls are, and test out any other features that are especially important to you.

Actually driving the car is a chance to find out a lot about the vehicle. Pay attention to the ride quality, and try out the navigation system if there is one, connect your mobile device through Bluetooth or Apple CarPlay/Android Auto if they’re available, and listen to how noisy the cabin is.

Make sure visibility is ideal for you. If you have trouble seeing or you’re not comfortable with how much you can see, try another vehicle. Make sure you have enough power to quickly merge into traffic, can turn easily, and won’t have trouble parking it.

It’s a lot to think about, so if you need to, ask your salesperson if you can extend the drive a little, and never be afraid to ask questions about features you aren’t familiar with.
